CALCULATE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Content

What is Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)

How long does alcohol stay in your body? Do women and men burn alcohol at the same rate? When can I drive? How many calories have I drunk? These are common questions that we will try to answer.

Burning alcohol takes time and can't be accelerated, so forget all the tricks you've heard about. It takes about 1.5 - 2.5 hours to get completely sober after drinking a 33cl strong beer.
A rule of thumb is that we burn just over 2cl of alcohol per hour, although this figure can be affected by both body weight and gender. Sensitivity to alcohol increases with age, partly due to changes in metabolism - another factor that plays a big part is how much you weigh.

A larger person burns more alcohol than someone who weighs less. Since women generally weigh less and have less water per kilogram of body weight than men, a woman will, on average, be more intoxicated if she drinks the same amount of alcohol as a man.

How long alcohol stays in the body varies between people, but a rule of thumb is to burn 0.1 grams of alcohol per kilogram of body weight per hour.
The influence of alcohol is often measured by the concentration of alcohol in the blood. The concentration is expressed in per mille, which means thousandths. One part per thousand of alcohol in the blood thus means that one thousandth of the blood consists of alcohol.

Many people come here to see if they are ready to drive. It is worth mentioning that even if you have burnt off all the alcohol, your ability to drive may still be impaired by up to 20%.

BAC levels & their effects

It's common to feel relaxed and happy after a few drinks, but what actually happens in your body when you drink? Here's a summary of common symptoms and how our bodies react to alcohol at different levels of alcohol.

0.02 - 0.06%

You feel slightly relaxed and a little dizzy, your inhibitions have eased a little. Your judgement may have deteriorated slightly.

0.06 - 0.08%

With this level of blood alcohol, you feel more relaxed, even less inhibited, may feel warmer, less coordinated and your judgement has become even poorer.

0.08 - 0.15%

Coordination has further deteriorated, balance may be impaired, speech may become slurred, concentration difficulties, possible memory impairment, poorer reactivity and self-control.

0.15 - 0.20%

Even less control over muscles and balance. You risk falling and hurting yourself, increased risk of vomiting, difficulty walking and chance of restlessness and anxiety.

0.20 - 0.29%

Very likely for memory lapses around this BAC, the chance of injury increases as your judgement is significantly poorer and you probably feel less pain. Likely to need help walking.

0.30 - 0.39%

High risk of unconsciousness, unlikely to have any understanding of where you are and what you are doing. Near death.

0.40% and over

Risk of coma and even death due to slowing of breathing and heart rate.

Limit for drunk driving

Below you can see a list of the drink-drive limits worldwide. Worth mentioning is that this data is from 2016 and may have changed since then.
In most countries it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level too high, you rarely need to drink a lot of alcohol to reach this limit.

Driving drunk in most countries carries a fine, a suspended licence or even a prison sentence in some countries.

Warning

This BAC calculator is for information purposes only, the result is only an estimate of your BAC, therefore we cannot guarantee its exact accuracy.

There are a lot of factors that affect your alcohol metabolism, such as age, gender, weight, metabolism, body fat, what you have eaten and medications.
Because of all these different factors and variables, it is unfortunately impossible for us to give you an exact answer.

So never use the results of a breathalyser as an indication of whether you are ready to drive or not.
It's always best to leave your car at home the day after you've had a drink.
The most accurate answer you can get about your BAC requires a blood test or breathalyzer.
