What is an ideal body fat percentage?

Generally speaking, a good body fat percentage for women is between 21 and 35 percent and for men it is 8 to 24 percent, with age also playing a role.

Body fat includes essential body fat and storage fat. Essential body fat is a basic level of fat found in most parts of the body. It is essential fat that is vital to our well-being.
The amount of essential fat differs between men and women. For men it is usually between 2-5% and for women between 10-13%. As excess body fat can have many negative effects on a person's health, too low a level of body fat can also have negative health effects.

How to measure circumference

To calculate body fat percentage using the U.S. Navy method, the circumference of both the neck and waist is required for men, women also need to enter the circumference of the hips.

Measure the waist horizontally around the belly button for men, women measure at their leanest point. To get a reliable result, the stomach should not be pulled inwards.

Measure the neck circumference at a point just below the larynx. Look straight ahead. Keep the tape measure as close to horizontal as anatomically possible.

For women, measure the hip horizontally at the widest point.
