Calculate your body fat percentage using our comprehensive calculator. Choose from multiple estimation methods and get insights about your body composition.

Why Body Fat Percentage Matters

Body fat percentage is a key indicator of health and fitness. Unlike BMI, it specifically measures fat content, helping distinguish between lean mass and fat mass. This information is crucial for setting fitness goals and monitoring progress.

How to Use the Body Fat Calculator

  1. 1
Select your preferred measurement method and unit system
  2. 2
Enter your gender and basic measurements
  3. 3
    Input required body measurements accurately
  4. 4
Get your body fat percentage and category

Tips for Accurate Measurements

Take measurements in the morning before eating. Use a flexible measuring tape and measure at the same locations consistently. For most accurate results, have a fitness professional take your measurements.

The calculator uses proven formulas like the U.S. Navy method, which is accurate within 3-4% for most people when measurements are taken correctly. For clinical accuracy, use methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing.

Healthy ranges vary by gender and age. For men, 10-20% is generally considered healthy, while for women, 18-28% is healthy. Athletes may have lower percentages, while higher percentages may indicate increased health risks.

Circumference methods typically sit within a few percentage points of densitometry for groups, with larger errors for individuals — especially if you are very lean, very muscular, or carry fat in atypical places. Treat the result as an estimate, not a lab measurement.

For the Navy method, measure the waist at the narrowest point, or at the navel if there is no obvious narrowing. Keep the tape level, snug but not compressing skin, and measure after a normal exhale.

Yes. The Navy equations use different circumference sites and coefficients. Men need abdomen and neck; women need waist, hip and neck. Using the wrong sex formula produces a meaningless number.

ACE and similar ranges put essential fat around 2–5% for men and 10–13% for women, athletes lower than the general fitness range, and obesity above roughly 25% (men) or 32% (women). Age, sex and sport matter; a clinician or sports dietitian can interpret your number.

BMI ignores composition. Two people with the same BMI can have very different fat percentages. The circumference method can also overestimate if the tape is loose or placed too high/low.

No. DEXA, hydrostatic weighing and Bod Pod are laboratory methods. This calculator is a field estimate for tracking trend when you measure the same way each time.

Every 2–4 weeks is enough during a cut or bulk. Circumferences fluctuate with gut content, hydration and training. Compare weekly averages, not single days.

Yes. Measure in the morning after using the bathroom, before food, with the same tape. Evening measurements are often higher because of food volume and fluid shifts.

Track Your Progress

Use this calculator regularly to track changes in your body composition. Remember that healthy, sustainable body fat reduction takes time and should be achieved through balanced nutrition and regular exercise.

The U.S. Navy circumference method

This calculator implements the circumference equations developed for naval personnel: abdomen and neck for men; waist, hip and neck for women, combined with height. The method is a field estimate. It is cheaper and faster than DEXA, and less precise.

Tape placement dominates error. Measure at the same landmarks, with the same tension, at the same time of day. A loose tape underestimates circumferences and can swing the percentage by several points.

Using the number without obsessing

Body-fat percentage is more informative than scale weight when you are training. Still, the trend over weeks beats any single reading. Hydration, gut content and menstrual cycle can move circumferences without a real fat change.

If you need a clinical or athletic classification, ask for a method your coach or clinician trusts. This page exists so you can run the Navy math yourself and see the inputs.
