Eating on a budget without abandoning protein

A calorie target is useless if groceries are unaffordable. This article lists cheap protein and carbohydrate staples and how to batch-cook them. Prices vary by country; the pattern travels.
Cheap protein
Eggs, dried beans, lentils, canned fish, tofu, yoghurt, frozen chicken and cottage cheese are the usual workhorses. Protein powder is optional and sometimes cost-effective, sometimes not — compare cost per 20 g protein.
Whole animals and store brands beat convenience cuts. Frozen is not inferior.
Cheap carbohydrate and produce
Oats, rice, potatoes, pasta, seasonal fruit and frozen vegetables carry fibre and energy for little money. Fresh herbs and sauces keep repetition edible.
Batch cooking
Cook a protein and a starch twice a week. Assembly meals beat daily recipes when time is the real constraint. Food waste is a hidden grocery bill.
Still use the calculators
Budget food can overshoot calories (oil, cheese, rice). Weigh the calorie-dense parts. The calorie and protein calculators still apply.
