Vegetables that actually add protein

Written by The Kalcule Team · Last updated August 17, 2026

Peas, corn, broccoli, spinach and potatoes add useful grams, especially in large volumes. Legumes are the real plant-protein staples and sit in a grey zone between vegetable and protein food.

Legumes first

Lentils, beans, chickpeas and soy are how plant-based eaters hit targets. Green vegetables help but are supporting actors.

Volume versus density

A kilogram of boiled broccoli is a lot of chewing for the protein you get. Combine vegetables with tofu, tempeh, dairy or eggs if you use them.

Frozen is fine

Frozen peas and spinach are cheap protein-plus-micronutrient add-ins for soups, rice and eggs.

Still count calories

Starchy vegetables are not free. The calorie calculator still applies. Protein vegetables are not a loophole. Legumes and soy do the heavy lifting — see the protein calculator.

Realistic grams from common servings

A cup of peas or a large baked potato can add 4–8 g. A side of broccoli adds a few grams more. That helps a daily total. It does not replace 150 g of tofu or a bowl of lentils.

Per-calorie, leafy greens look “high protein.” Per plate, they are a garnish. Plan the protein calculator target with legumes and soy first, vegetables second.

Soy and legumes as the main act

Tofu, tempeh, edamame, lentils and beans are how plant-based eaters hit sports-range intakes without eating a kilogram of spinach. Treat them as the protein column in the macro calculator, not as a vegetable side.

Complementary amino acids can be spread across the day. You do not need rice-and-beans chemistry at every sitting.

Vegetables still have calories

Corn, peas and potatoes are carbohydrate foods that happen to bring some protein. Oil on roasted vegetables is the usual log leak. The calorie calculator still applies.

Frozen peas and spinach are cheap add-ins, not a loophole. See protein in fruit if you arrived from the same search pattern.
