Are my macros healthy? How to tell

Written by The Kalcule Team · Last updated August 17, 2026

Healthy macros sit inside a reasonable calorie range, include enough protein and fibre, do not chronically wipe out a food group without a reason, and leave room to live. Lab work and symptoms still beat a spreadsheet.

Check energy first

A “perfect” split at 1,000 kcal for a large active adult is not healthy. Use the calorie calculator before decorating the ratio.

AMDR as a sanity band

Adult AMDR bands (roughly 10–35% protein, 45–65% carbohydrate, 20–35% fat) are wide. Sitting slightly outside them can be fine; sitting far outside them for months deserves a reason and maybe a professional.

Fibre, plants and repeatability

If the split only works on chicken, oil and whey, it is fragile. If you are exhausted, injured, or losing menstrual cycles, the split is not “working.”

When to stop tracking

Health includes mental load. If macros are running your mood, that is a signal to loosen the system and, if needed, get eating-disorder-informed care.

Use the calorie calculator before decorating ratios

A tidy 40/30/30 split at a crash calorie level is not a healthy split. Run the calorie calculator first. The adult AMDR bands (about 10–35% protein, 45–65% carbohydrate, 20–35% fat) are wide on purpose.

Sitting slightly outside them can be fine for a training block. Sitting far outside them for months, with no fibre and no medical reason, is a reason to loosen the plan or talk to a professional. The macro calculator will still output whatever you ask for.

Red flags that are not a spreadsheet problem

Missed periods, repeated injuries, fainting, a shrinking social life, or a log that decides your mood are health outcomes. Changing the fat percentage will not fix them.

Kidney disease, eating-disorder history, pregnancy and paediatric use are outside a public macro form. This page is a sanity check, not clearance to keep restricting.

Loosening the system on purpose

Health includes mental load. After you have learned typical portions, a simple plate pattern plus weekly weigh-ins is often better than tracking every gram forever.

If you cannot loosen tracking without panic, that is information. Get eating-disorder-informed care rather than a stricter ratio. Related: when to adjust and deficits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Judging whether a macro split is sensible.

It can be used medically or personally with monitoring. It is not the default healthy split on this site.

In healthy kidneys, sports-range intakes are generally considered acceptable. Disease states need clinicians.

No. Body size, sex and training differ.

Bloodwork can flag problems. It cannot crown a 40/30/30 split as universally optimal.

Very low fat is hard to sustain and can be inappropriate for some people. It needs a reason, not a default. Ask a professional if you plan to stay there.

Yes. Many people do better with a plate template after they have calibrated once.

They are adult planning bands. Athletes often sit at the edges for a training block. That is a coaching call, not a Kalcule verdict.

No. Use energy, protein, fibre, and a pattern you can repeat.
