Calorie restriction versus a structured deficit
Written by The Kalcule Team · Last updated 18. August 2026
“Restriction” is a loaded word. A planned, adequate deficit with enough protein is not the same as chaotic undereating. This article separates research on caloric restriction from crash dieting.
What the longevity literature is not
Rodent caloric-restriction studies do not give you a licence to eat 1,200 kcal forever. Human evidence is mixed, adherence is hard, and muscle and bone matter more as you age.
This site will not sell anti-ageing restriction protocols.
Crash diets
Very low calories without supervision risk gallstones, nutrient gaps, lean-mass loss and rebound. If a clinician has you on a medical VLCD, follow them — not a calculator.
Psychological restriction
If food rules are running your life, calculators can become a ritual of harm. Eating-disorder care is specialised. Seek it.
A saner default
Modest deficit, protein target, resistance training, a diet-break at maintenance if you have been cutting for months. Recalculate as weight changes.

Restriction, fasting and safety.
It is a schedule. It creates a deficit only if total intake falls. It is not required.
Time at maintenance can restore training quality and sanity. It is not a metabolic miracle.
Slowly raising calories after a cut. Some people like the structure; it is not mandatory to “repair” metabolism.
Do not. Growth needs energy. See a paediatric professional.
