Calories, hormones and what a calculator cannot see
Written by The Kalcule Team · Last updated 18. august 2026
Hormones influence hunger, menstrual cycles and where fat is stored. They do not repeal energy balance. Very low energy availability can disrupt hormones — that is a reason to eat more, not to buy an untested supplement.
Thyroid and “slow metabolism”
T3 can fall a little in a deficit. That is not the same as clinical hypothyroidism. Do not self-order thyroid drugs from a forum. If you have symptoms, get proper testing.
Sex hormones and energy availability
Low energy availability is linked to menstrual disruption, low libido and bone-stress injuries. Restore intake and see a clinician. A bigger deficit is the wrong answer.
Insulin is not a morality play
Insulin responds to meals. Fat loss still requires a deficit over time. Carbohydrate-insulin claims that ignore energy intake do not match how this calculator is built.
What to do practically
Use the calorie calculator conservatively, keep protein up, lift, sleep. If cycles stop, if you have known endocrine disease, or if weight changes do not match intake, stop guessing.

Hormones, dieting and when to see a clinician.
Severe, prolonged deficits can lower it. Modest cuts plus lifting and sleep are a different experiment.
Many people with PCOS lose fat in a deficit, sometimes more slowly. That is a clinical conversation about the whole picture, not a special Kalcule mode.
Any diet that works did so by changing intake, output or both. Hormones are the physiology, not a loophole.
If you have symptoms or a relevant history, ask a clinician. Testing “just because” is their call.
