How much protein in one meal?

Written by The Kalcule Team · Last updated 18 august 2026

The idea that the body “wastes” anything over 30 grams is a myth. There is a per-meal stimulus ceiling for muscle protein synthesis, and there is still a daily total to hit.

The 30-gram myth

You digest more than 30 g. Extra amino acids are oxidised or used for other tissues. You do not need to pulse 30 g every three hours unless that schedule helps you eat enough.

A practical distribution

Three to four eating occasions with 20–40 g each is enough structure for most adults chasing a sports-range daily total. Huge single meals still count toward the day.

Anabolic window

Total daily protein and training matter more than a 30-minute post-workout shake. A meal in the hours around training is plenty for most people.
